Featured Work

Every project is unique and each comes with its special challenges and opportunities.
At The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry, we welcome the challenges as they inspire and,
in fact, require creativity. Below are some of our favorites ... recent and not so.
Each one has a story and resulting design that we are proud to feature!

Cibo Matto

The Wit Hotel

Chicago, Illinois

Located on the 2nd floor of a new specialty hotel in downtown Chicago, this upscale Italian restaurant fit-out takes its inspiration from the cuisine. Cibo Matto’s design is both Italian and rustically modern combining old world finishes of mahogany leather and bleached cherry with beautiful polished chrome details and plenty of unexpected twists such as the thirty foot oval ceiling fresco ... a tongue-in-cheek play on the Renaissance art form.

Del Frisco's Grille

Rockefeller Center

New York, New York

Drawing inspiration from the early 1900’s, Del Frisco’s Grille NYC combines industrial materials, such as rough-sawn wood and steel, with more refined finishes and signature Del Frisco’s steakhouse design elements to create an urban yet comfortable approach to fine casual dining. TJS was chosen to design this first “Grille” for the prestigious Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group, widely known for their upscale prime steakhouses. A re-purposed corner tenant space in historic Rockefeller Center was the place chosen to launch this exciting and very well received new concept.

Fearing's

The Ritz-Carlton

Dallas, Texas

For those who like variety, Fearing’s provides four distinct indoor dining experiences. The dark paneled lounge features the mesquite wood Rattlesnake Bar with its leather wrapped bar rail offset by a cast bronze rattlesnake head and tail. This lively bar contrasts the formal ambiance of The Gallery dining room where custom artwork framed in glowing onyx highlights the white paneling, hardwood floors, and 10 foot long crystal chandeliers. The casual dining experience of Dean’s Kitchen features a stunning expo kitchen with custom copper hood, willow art glass screen and settee style seating. Overlooking the magnificent garden and dining terrace, the Sendora brings the outdoors inside into a beautiful garden pavilion. This project was a new build-out and part of the initial interior construction of the Ritz-Carlton hotel.

A warm color palette combined with textured, natural materials creates a luxurious dining environment inspired by the surrounding mountain resort of Lake Tahoe. Highlights include an exposed bark edge wood slat ceiling farmed from locally grown and replenished trees, a stainless steel soffit punctuated with glowing manzanita trees and a reclaimed tree slab chef’s table providing an intimate and personal dining experience at the expo kitchen. An exposed wood truss ceiling and reclaimed wood plank walls create a dramatic environment perfect for highlighting the relationship between food and community. Flexible seating with moveable partitions creates an open air patio atmosphere while the central bar and expo kitchen take center stage in the dining room. Reclaimed brick walls and a mixture of found, industrial furniture transforms this former retail space into a welcome neighborhood destination in the heart of Winter Park.

The Royce

The Langham Hotel

Pasadena, California

An exceptional discovery in the iconic Langham Pasadena Hotel, this restaurant, with juxtaposed traditional and modern elements, blends classic design with Southern California flair. The dramatic entrance is flanked by gorgeous glass wine rooms ... one for white and one for red. The crystalline Chef’s Table room is the interior focal point; while the Langham’s beautiful garden setting is featured from the expanded Veranda room. This project was a renovation and expansion of an existing dining room and makes use of many pre-existing elements that have been re-worked into a new life.

The Spence

Atlanta, Georgia

With a nostalgic yet playful design, this restaurants charming ambience welcomes guests ... and harkens to a more simplistic era. Honest materials, such as natural heart pine, raw zinc, and brick recall patron’s familiar memories, while modern elements inject the current times. This project was a makeover of an existing restaurant that was a complete departure from the previous tenant and included creating an expo kitchen and a new bar on a very limited budget.
