Situated within The Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis, The Johnson Studio was tasked with relocating and re-imagining the experience of a cigar club, one capable of hosting more than 300 members and offering 394 humidors. The design intent focused on creating a speakeasy concept with a nod to the Roaring 1920s; one that celebrates the love of cigars.
The focal point of the design is a dramatic glowing bar anchored in the center of the space, separating the lounge from the back room with card tables. The bar itself features brass and glass back-lit bar shelves, a burl wood and brass bar die, and Asian statuary marble bar top. Behind the bar are sliding glass and wood doors that can enclose the back portion of the club to create a private and exclusive area. The coffered walnut wood-paneled ceiling was designed to conceal four smoke-eater systems and acoustic paneling, ensuring smoke and sound does not travel to other areas of the hotel. Throughout the club are a variety of plush modern furnishings suitable for the elite clientele. The artwork reinforces the story with framed antique cigar lighters and cutters. Every detail of the Cigar Club celebrates the guest’s love of cigars in a dark and sophisticated environment.
